Does completing this course make me a certified or court-approved mediator?
No. Completing the WBGR ADR Institute course satisfies the 40-hour basic-training prerequisite — and that prerequisite only. It does not, by itself, make you a certified, licensed, or court-approved mediator. After you finish, you apply through MACRO (the Maryland Judiciary's Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office) and the courts, then complete the supervised observation, apprenticeship, and co-mediation experience that actually qualifies you to mediate on a court roster.
So what do I receive when I finish?
You receive a certificate of completion documenting that you completed 40 hours of basic facilitative mediation training under Maryland Rule 17. That certificate is the credential you present when you apply through MACRO and the district and community programs for the supervised experience described above.
I'm not in Maryland — can I still take this training?
Yes. The 40-hour facilitative mediation skillset is the recognized national foundation for the field, and the training is broadly applicable wherever you intend to practice. We teach it to Maryland Rule 17 depth because that is one of the most rigorous standards in the country, so you graduate well-prepared rather than narrowly prepared. What differs is eligibility: each state (and many courts and programs) sets its own rules for who may serve as a mediator, and confirming your own jurisdiction's requirements is yours to do. Use our certificate of completion as the 40-hour basic-training credential, then apply through the program that governs where you live.
What are the next steps after the course?
Apply through MACRO and your circuit court's ADR program, then log the required observation and co-mediation hours under an experienced mediator. Community mediation centers are usually the fastest place to begin building those hours. The Institute's lays out the complete pathway.

Mock Mediations
Course requirement: Each student must complete at least two (2) mock mediations as the mediator and upload both recordings to the Professor Portal for review before finishing the course.
Instructions:

How This Training Is Recognized in Your State
The 40-hour facilitative mediation skillset taught here is the recognized national foundation for the field, and the certificate of completion travels with you to any state. What that certificate buys you, though, depends on which of two separate questions you are asking — and the answer to each is set by your own state, not by the Institute.
Question 1
Becoming an eligible or court-rostered mediator
The United States does not generally license mediators. Instead, courts and programs maintain rosters or certification programs, and a basic mediation training course — commonly in the 20-to-40-hour range — is a typical prerequisite. Your certificate documents that foundational training. Eligibility, supervised-experience, and roster rules then vary by state, court, and program, and confirming them where you intend to practice is yours to do.
Continuing legal education is administered separately by each jurisdiction. The certificate records the instructional hours you completed, but CLE credit is rarely automatic: in most states the course or the attorney must apply to the state's CLE authority for accreditation. A handful of states have no mandatory CLE at all. Use the per-state note below as a starting point and confirm with the authority linked there.
Reviewer access — certificate printing is disabled.
You are signed in with a shared reviewer login, which exists to explore the Student Portal. A Certificate of Completion can only be issued to an enrolled student who has finished the coursework, met the required contact hours, and attested to the Institute's Code of Conduct.
Certificates issued by the Institute carry a unique certificate ID that anyone can confirm at www.wbgradrinstitute.org under "Verify Certificate".

Court-connected ADR rosters
The formal route to mediating real disputes. Designation usually requires your 40-hour certificate, a number of observation and co-mediation hours, and approval onto the court's roster.
The Maryland Judiciary's Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) administers the statewide standards and the centralized Title 17 application for practitioners seeking designation to serve in the circuit and orphans' courts. Free mediation and settlement conferences for civil and landlord-tenant cases in District Court locations statewide — both before the trial date and on the day of trial. It is one of the best places to observe live sessions and build co-mediation hours close to home.
Maryland Circuit Court Family & Civil ADR Programs
Apprenticeship · co-mediation on custody, divorce & civil cases
Each circuit court maintains its own ADR roster for family (custody, divorce) and civil disputes, coordinated through MACRO's standards. Higher-stakes cases that reward an apprenticeship under an experienced mediator before you take the lead.
The District of Columbia's court-connected program resolves civil, small-claims, and family matters through mediation. It recruits and trains volunteer mediators and offers a structured path of observation and co-mediation before solo cases. Apply through the division's volunteer page.
The fastest place to begin. Most centers welcome newly certified mediators, pair you with a mentor for apprenticeship and co-mediation, and the hours you log here count toward the court rosters above. Start with the statewide network, then reach the center nearest you.

Information we collect
Registration details — your first and last name, email address, phone number, the training program you select, your chosen payment method, and, where you claim the military discount, your confirmation that you hold a DD 214.
Account and learning records — your assigned student number, course progress, quiz attempts and scores, recorded contact hours, attendance, and certificate of completion records.
Mock-mediation submissions — recordings you upload or link, the names of the practice parties you enter, and the notes and grades exchanged with your reviewer.
Payment references — the payment method and confirmation details needed to reconcile your tuition. We do not collect or store full bank account numbers, full routing numbers, card numbers, or banking passwords.
Technical data — information your browser sends automatically, and limited data stored in your browser (for example, local session progress) to operate the portal.
How we use information
To enroll you, deliver the training, and track your progress toward completion.
To confirm tuition payments and, where applicable, calculate instructor payouts.
To issue and later verify your certificate of completion.
To respond to your enrollment, payment, and support requests.
To operate, secure, and improve the portal.
How information is stored and shared
Portal data is held in managed cloud infrastructure (including Netlify hosting, database, and file storage) protected by access controls. We share information only as needed to run the program — for example, with the payment service you choose (such as PayPal, Zelle, or Cash App) to confirm tuition, or with a hosting provider that stores uploaded recordings — or where required by law. We do not sell your personal information. Certificate verification is public by design: anyone with a certificate ID can confirm the name, program, completion date, ID, and issuer printed on that certificate, but never your email or account.
Analytics and cookies
We use privacy-friendly, first-party analytics to understand which pages are visited so we can improve the site. These analytics are aggregate and anonymous: we count page views by page address only and do not use tracking cookies, advertising networks, cross-site identifiers, or any third-party analytics service, and we do not build a profile of you. Analytics run only after you accept them in the consent notice shown on your first visit; if you decline, no analytics data is sent. Your choice is remembered in your own browser’s local storage so we do not have to ask again, and you can change it at any time by clearing your browser storage for this site. Aside from this optional analytics signal, the site uses only the local browser storage strictly necessary to operate the portal (for example, keeping you signed in and saving your course progress).
Data retention
We keep enrollment, learning, certificate, and payout records for as long as needed to administer the program and meet recordkeeping, tax, and legal obligations. You may ask us to delete information that we are not required to retain.
Your choices and rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, subject to records we must keep. To make a request, contact us using the details below. The portal is intended for adults; it is not directed to children under 18.
Security
We use measures such as encrypted connections (HTTPS) and role-based access to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with a new effective date.

Refund Policy
Effective date: June 7, 2026
WBGR ADR Institute wants you to enroll with confidence. This policy explains when tuition for the 40-Hour Basic Facilitative Mediation Training (and Sports & Entertainment modules) is refundable. It applies to all payment methods. Tuition is paid by Cash App, Zelle, or PayPal, and approved refunds are confirmed and returned manually by the Institute.
Before your cohort or course access begins
Full refund if you request cancellation in writing at least 7 days before your cohort start date (for live cohorts) or before your portal course access is activated (for self-paced enrollment).
Within 7 days of the start, and before you have accessed course materials, you may cancel for a refund of tuition less a $95 administrative fee.
After course access or the cohort begins
Once you have accessed the curriculum slides, lecture videos, or other course materials, tuition is non-refundable, because the digital course content has been delivered.
No refund is available after a certificate of completion has been issued, or after you have submitted a mock mediation for review.
How to request a refund
Email payments@wbgradrinstitute.org (or call 202-299-8435) with your full name, the email used at registration, and your reason for the request. For Cash App, Zelle, and PayPal, approved refunds are returned using the same method where possible, normally within 14 business days of approval; because those payments are confirmed manually, please allow time for the Institute to verify the original payment.
Discounts, transfers, and exceptions
The military/DD 214 discount and other promotional pricing are applied to tuition before any refund is calculated; refunds never exceed the amount actually paid.
If you cannot continue, you may ask to transfer your enrollment to a later cohort once, at no charge, instead of cancelling.
If the Institute cancels a cohort or is unable to deliver the training you paid for, you are entitled to a full refund or a transfer, at your choice.
Fees charged by an outside payment provider are outside the Institute's control and are not part of a refund.

Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the WBGR ADR Institute website and training portal and your enrollment in its programs. By registering, paying tuition, or using the portal, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the site.
The training
WBGR ADR Institute provides a 40-Hour Basic Facilitative Mediation Training and related modules, aligned with the facilitative framework and Maryland Rule 17 awareness. Completing the training and receiving a certificate confirms that you finished the Institute's program. It is not a license to practice law or a guarantee of court roster placement, certification by any government body, employment, or any particular outcome. Requirements to serve as a mediator vary by jurisdiction and are your responsibility to confirm.
Enrollment and accounts
You must be at least 18 years old and provide accurate registration information.
You are responsible for keeping your portal login confidential and for activity under your account.
Accounts and certificates are personal to you and may not be shared, sold, or transferred.
Tuition and payment
Tuition is stated at registration (the standard Basic Training tuition is $995, with separate pricing for the military/DD 214 discount and Sports & Entertainment modules). A limited founding-cohort rate may be offered to our first cohorts; the price shown at registration is the price that applies. You may pay by Cash App, Zelle, or PayPal, which the Institute confirms manually. Access to course materials may depend on confirmed payment. Refunds and cancellations are governed by our .
Acceptable use
Use the portal only for your own training and lawful purposes.
Do not copy, record, redistribute, or publicly post the curriculum slides, lecture videos, quizzes, or other course materials without written permission.
Do not attempt to disrupt, reverse engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the portal or other users' accounts.
For mock mediations, obtain the consent of everyone recorded, use the practice scenarios only for training, and do not upload unlawful or infringing content.
Intellectual property
The course materials, slide decks, videos, quizzes, role-play scenarios, branding, and site content are owned by WBGR ADR Institute or its licensors and are protected by law. You receive a limited, personal, non-transferable license to use them for your own training while enrolled.
Student content
You keep ownership of recordings and materials you submit. By submitting them, you grant the Institute a limited license to store, display, and review that content for the purpose of grading your mock mediations and administering your enrollment.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The site and training are provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Institute is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and its total liability relating to the training will not exceed the tuition you paid for the program at issue. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be handled in the courts located in Maryland, unless the parties agree to resolve the matter through mediation or arbitration first.

Code of Conduct for Mediators

The WBGR ADR Institute has formally adopted this Code of Conduct for every student, graduate, and instructor of its mediation training. It is aligned to and adapted from the 2005 Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators, prepared by the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Dispute Resolution, and the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR). Those Model Standards are the recognized ethical framework for the practice of mediation in the United States, and the nine standards below restate their duties as commitments each member of the WBGR ADR community agrees to uphold.
This Code is an ethical commitment, not a substitute for the rules of any court, agency, or jurisdiction in which you may serve. Where a court order, statute, or local rule imposes a stricter or different requirement, that requirement governs.
Standard I — Self-Determination
A mediator shall conduct a mediation based on the principle of party self-determination. Self-determination is the act of coming to a voluntary, uncoerced decision in which each party makes free and informed choices as to process and outcome. I will respect each party's right to reach their own voluntary agreement, will not pressure or coerce a party into settlement, and will not allow my own preferences about the outcome to override the parties' decisions.
Standard II — Impartiality
A mediator shall decline a mediation if the mediator cannot conduct it in an impartial manner. I will serve only in matters in which I can remain impartial, will conduct the mediation in an even-handed way, free of favoritism, bias, or prejudice based on a party's personal characteristics, background, values, or conduct, and will withdraw if I am no longer able to act impartially.
Standard III — Conflicts of Interest
A mediator shall avoid a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest during and after a mediation. I will make a reasonable inquiry to identify conflicts, will disclose as soon as practicable any fact or relationship that a reasonable person would consider likely to affect my impartiality, and will not mediate — or will withdraw — where a conflict casts serious doubt on the integrity of the process, unless the parties, after disclosure, freely choose to proceed.
Standard IV — Competence
A mediator shall mediate only when the mediator has the necessary competence to satisfy the reasonable expectations of the parties. I will undertake only matters for which I am qualified by training and experience, will be candid about my qualifications, and will continue to develop my skills and understanding of the mediation process.
Standard V — Confidentiality
A mediator shall maintain the confidentiality of all information obtained by the mediator in mediation, unless otherwise agreed to by the parties or required by applicable law. I will not disclose information shared in confidence, will honor any agreement the parties reach about confidentiality, will keep confidences shared with me in a private caucus unless given permission to reveal them, and will use confidential information only as permitted.
Standard VI — Quality of the Process
A mediator shall conduct a mediation in accordance with these Standards and in a manner that promotes diligence, timeliness, safety, presence of the appropriate participants, party participation, procedural fairness, party competency, and mutual respect among all participants. I will conduct mediations diligently and respectfully, will not undertake more than I can do well, will not knowingly misrepresent any material fact, and will not allow a mediation to be used to further illegal conduct.
Standard VII — Advertising and Solicitation
A mediator shall be truthful and not misleading when advertising, soliciting, or otherwise communicating the mediator's qualifications, experience, services, and fees. I will not make promises or guarantees about outcomes, will represent my training and credentials accurately, and will not state or imply that completing this training is a government license or court certification where it is not.
Standard VIII — Fees and Other Charges
A mediator shall provide each party or each party's representative true and complete information about mediation fees, expenses, and any other actual or potential charges that may be incurred in connection with a mediation. I will explain my fees and charges fully and in advance, will base them on objective and fair factors, and will not enter into a fee arrangement that is contingent on the outcome or the amount of any settlement.
Standard IX — Advancement of Mediation Practice
A mediator should act in a manner that advances the practice of mediation. I will support access to mediation, will treat all participants and colleagues with respect, will be open to feedback and continued learning, and will help promote the responsible, ethical practice of mediation in my community.
